Helene Schneider

Helene Schneider (born November 18, 1970 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and Mayor of Santa Barbara in California .

Career

Schneider attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York State , before moving to California with future husband David Greenberg in 1992. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1997 and then worked as a consultant for human resources .

From 2004 Helene Schneider was on the city council of Santa Barbara - as one of ten applicants, she won one of the three free places as the only female candidate. In 2010 she won the mayoral elections in the traditionally more republican city and succeeded Marty Blum , who was no longer running. In the elections in November 2013 Schneider was confirmed in office with only one candidate with 73.3%.

Like her predecessor in office, as Mayor of Santa Barbara she supports the Mayors Against Illegal Guns initiative launched in 2006 by former Mayors of New York, Michael Bloomberg , and Boston, Thomas Menino .

As one of around 60 California mayors, she promotes the Freedom to Marry campaign for the introduction of same-sex marriage across the US.

In April 2015, she announced that she would run for the seat of the Democratic MP Lois Capps , who is no longer running for re-election , in the 2016 congressional elections . The seat was won by Salud Carbajal .
