The Helfenberger Bach is a tributary of the Elbe in the east of Dresden . It rises in the Schönfeld highlands on the boundary between Gönnsdorf and Cunnersdorf and flows in a south-westerly direction to the Elbe. The most important inflow is the Kucksche. The entire catchment area covers 2.8 square kilometers. The Helfenberger Bach runs with an average flow gradient of 5.1% through the Dresden districts of Cunnersdorf, Gönnsdorf, Helfenberg , Pappritz , Niederpoyritz . The water between the headwaters and Helfenberg has a largely natural character and is surrounded by forest. After 3.3 kilometers of flowing stretch (of which 3.1 kilometers are open and 0.2 kilometers piped sections of water) the brook flows orographically to the right in Niederpoyritz into the Elbe.

The Helfenberger Bach between the headwaters and the Helfenberg has the biological water quality class I – II (low pollution) (according to water investigations from 2001). In the further course of the river there is water quality class II (moderately polluted). According to the Saxon Water Act, it is a second-order body of water of flowing water type 5 (according to the Water Framework Directive ), i.e. a high-material, silicate mountain stream . The slope of the brook causes the water to run off quickly in heavy rain. At mean natural low water, the discharge into the Elbe is 0.01 m³ / s. This can increase to values of 0.5 m³ / s ( 1-year flood ) up to 5.8 m³ / s (100-year flood).

The Helfenberg Castle and the Helfenberg Chemical Factory were located in the Helfenberger Grund, through which the Helfenberg brook flowed .
