Helfried Mostler (born January 16, 1934 in Graz ; † February 27, 2017 ) was an Austrian paleontologist and geologist and professor at the University of Innsbruck .

Career

Mostler studied geology and paleontology at the University of Graz with Helmut W. Flügel , Karl Metz and Haymo Heritsch and with Arthur Winkler-Hermaden at the TU Graz. He received his doctorate in 1963 under Werner Heissel at the University of Innsbruck, whose assistant he became and for whom he also worked in applied geology. At that time he dealt with tectonics and stratigraphy in the western section of the northern Grauwackenzone. In 1968 he completed his habilitation in geology and paleontology in Innsbruck, in 1973 he became associate professor and in 1979 full professor.

He dealt with micropaleontology ( conodonts , holothurias , radiolarians , porifers ) and stratigraphy of the Alpine Triassic , especially in the Northern Limestone Alps, the Drauzug and the Southern Alps. Since 1970 he has worked a lot with Heinz Kozur in micropalaeontology and stratigraphy. In 1972 he organized the international Trias Symposium in Innsbruck. In addition, he also dealt with reservoir science and worked as an engineering geologist.

He was the founder of the Geological-Paleontological Communications Innsbruck. He was twice awarded the Theodor-Körner-Prize and the First Science Prize of the State of Salzburg. Mostler died on February 27, 2017 at the age of 83.
