Arthur Winkler-Hermaden (born May 8, 1890 in Vienna as Arthur Karl Viktor Winkler ; † May 9, 1963 in Graz ) was an Austrian geologist and professor at the Graz University of Technology . He dealt in particular with regional geology of Styria , the tertiary basin in Austria and applied geology.

Life

Winkler-Hermaden was the son of what would later become Arthur Winkler von Hermaden , Lieutenant Field Marshal in the Austrian Army, and his wife Emma, née Hofmann von Wellenhof.

He spent his high school years up to sixth grade at the Franz-Joseph-Gymnasium in Vienna and then switched to the German State High School in Pilsen , where he passed the Matura examination with distinction in the spring of 1909. In the fall of 1909 he enrolled at the University of Vienna and began studying natural sciences, especially geology. In 1914 he received his doctorate from the University of Vienna , was a frontline officer in World War I and then worked at the Geological Reichsanstalt in Vienna. There he mapped in the tertiary of southern Styria , in the Hohe Tauern and in collaboration with the University of Padua in the southern Julian Alps . In 1921 he completed his habilitation in Vienna.

Winkler-Hermaden joined the NSDAP in 1933 as an “illegal” .

In 1936/37 he was temporarily at the State Deposit Research Center in Leipzig and then again at the Reich Geological Institute. 1941 at 1945 he was professor at the German Technical University in Prague, where he also dealt with the hydrogeology of Bohemia. After the war, he was relieved of his post because of his Nazi membership, interned in Wolfsberg for 2 years, banned from his profession and worked as a practical geologist, particularly in hydrogeology in Styria. 1954 to 1956 he was visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin and in Erlangen . In 1957 he became professor for mineralogy and technical geology at the TH Graz.

Winkler-Hermaden was married to Magdalene Helene Kobula (1892-1965). The marriage had a son, Burkhardt Winkler-Hermaden. The family seat was Kapfenstein Castle .

Arthur Winkler-Hermaden was a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Academy of Sciences in Bologna.
