reception

“Helga Budde-Engelke has dedicated a large part of her entire oeuvre to the decline of industries in North Rhine-Westphalia, her homeland [...]. It is less (but also) the aesthetics of ruins that may appeal to them than the slow retreat from the landscape. Colliery facilities slip away from view, the difference between building and environment disappears - without the natural landscape, for example, regenerating itself - sometimes emptiness heralds itself. In her pictures, it seems, a little sadness and a sense of loss are mixed up, because what has been familiar for a long time is now falling apart. Such a rather cautious handling of the decay issue is rare. "
