Hanel started skiing at an early age, her parents had already practiced skiing. She came to the ski club in her home town of St. Johann in Tirol , won several youth titles at district and state level, and received a special permit from the Tyrolean Ski Association in order to be able to take part in the Tyrolean state championships despite her young age. In total she won six Tyrolean championship titles in her career. Hanel was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association in 1957 and this winter achieved her first podium places in FIS races with second place in the slalom and third place in the giant slalom at Semmering. Further good placements in the mostly less occupied FIS-B races followed in the next few years. In 1958 she achieved second place behind Erika Netzer in the downhill run of the Gamperney Derby in Grabs , won the downhill run of the Coppa Femina in Abetone in 1959 and also took two third places in the slalom of St. Moritz and the giant slalom of Obergurgl in 1959 . At the Austrian Championships in Kitzbühel in 1959 , she was on the podium three times. However , she could not achieve a starting place at the 1960 Winter Olympics , whereupon she ended her career in spring 1960.

In 1962 Hanel passed the state ski instructor examination, after which she worked for several decades at the St. Johann ski school. For a long time she was a functionary and trainer in the St. Johann ski club. Her husband Franz Schweiberl was a trainer on the Arlberg and later in the World Cup service man for the ski company Kneissl .
