Helga Krüger (sociologist)

Helga Krüger (born April 1, 1940 ; † February 22, 2008 in Bremen ) was a German sociologist and educationalist . Most recently she was a professor at the University of Bremen .

biography

Kruger was the daughter of a dentist and his dental assistant. When her father was killed in World War II in 1939/40, the family moved to Dortmund to live with the mother's family. Krüger deepened her French language skills as an au pair in Paris.

From 1960 she studied Romance languages , philosophy , sports science and sociology at the University of Marburg , the University of Kiel and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá. In 1967 she graduated from grammar schools with the subjects Romance studies, sport and sociology. In 1970 she received her doctorate in Dr. phil. in the field of sociology with a dissertation in the sociology of literature .

From 1970 to 1971 she was a research assistant in the sociology department at Bielefeld University , from 1971 to 1974 Scientific Councilor for Sociology at the University of Hamburg and from 1974 to 2008 professor for sociology, family and professional socialization at the University of Bremen.

She was also involved:

  • During the student time in Kiel with the Socialist German Student Union (SDS)
  • as deputy chairwoman of the Federal Government's Expert Commission for the preparation of the 7th Family Report (2003–2005) and head of the research focus on work and education
  • from 1986 to 1994 as co-founder (at times deputy spokeswoman, 1998/99 spokeswoman) of the special research area Status Passages and Risk Situations in the Life Course of the DFG in Bremen
  • 1988 to 2001 as head of the DFG graduate school
  • as a member of the editorial board of the Zeitschrift für Familienforschung (ZfF), Yearbook Education and Work , Social Science Literature Review and neue praxis

Krüger was married to the university professor Wilfried Müller ; both have two children.

Research priorities

Krüger researched the social structure and family / professional socialization, gender policy in the vocational training and occupational structure, social change in gender relations, life course, labor market segmentation and family research. She made an important contribution to the development of nursing science in Germany. Some of her former doctoral students now hold a chair in nursing science, such as Hartmut Remmers (University of Osnabrück) and Margret Flieder (Ev. Darmstadt University).
