Heliothis peltigera , also called henbane flower owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of owls (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 29 to 40 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies in different yellowish and brownish tones. So there are straw-yellow or beige-brown colored specimens, which can sometimes be slightly dusty reddish. An extension of the black-brown kidney blemishes extends to the front edge. The ring flaws are only indicated by a very small point . Flaws are usually not recognizable. The wavy line ends in a distinct brown spot at the front edge. A black central spot and a broad, dark band with white fringes can be seen on the gray-brown hind wings.
Caterpillar
The caterpillars are yellow-green in color, have red-brown cross bars with fine white dots, gray back and side back lines and whitish side stripes.
Similar species
- Heliothis nubigera shows less prominent kidney defects and lighter hind wings.
- The cotton capsule owl ( Helicoverpa armigera ) is usually lighter and less contrasting in color. The kidney defects are indistinct and not connected to the leading edge.
distribution and habitat
Heliothis peltigera is distributed throughout the Mediterranean and subtropical Palearctic . In Africa, the southern occurrence extends to Sudan and Eritrea , in Europe the species is native to the Mediterranean area . She is a regular immigrant north and flies to England and Fennos Scandinavia . The warmth-loving species occurs mainly on warm slopes, hot wastelands and gardens.
Way of life
The moths are mostly diurnal and visit different flowers such as B. also the butterfly lilac ( Buddleja davidii ). They fly north in early summer and then form an autumn generation in August and September. The following individuals do not survive the winter in Central Europe. The caterpillars feed polyphagously on the leaves, flowers and in particular the seeds of various plants. These include henbane ( Hyoscyamus ), deadly nightshade ( Atropa belladonna ), meadow sage ( Salvia pratensis ), thorny grouse ( Ononis spinosa ) and others. In southern countries, the caterpillars can also be found on cultivated plants and can even become harmful.
Danger
Heliothis peltigera flies into Germany regularly, but in very different numbers, as a migrant butterfly and can occur in large numbers in climatically favorable years. The species is listed on the Red List of Endangered Species in some federal states as a random visitor.
