features

Construction of the Imago

The imago of Somatochlora franklini measures 44-54 mm, of which 25 to 30 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively small within the genus. The otherwise slim abdomen is swollen up to the third segment like a bulb. The pattern typical of the genus is composed as follows in Somatochlora franklini : On the second segment there is an apical , yellow ring. In the females, there are also small, yellow lines on the third and sixth segment. The black genital lobe of the males is tightly insisted.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is greenish to brass-colored and densely hairy. Under the hair there is a yellow pattern made up of several stripes, including two on the back. The hind wings measure 25 to 30 millimeters. In the otherwise transparent wings, the costalader and the wing mark ( pterostigma ) are yellow-brown. In the males, the anal area of the wing also has a brownish tinge. The legs are black except for the yellowish underside of the anterior femora .

In the bronze-colored, greenish face there are three large yellow spots that cover the anteclypeus and the sides of the frons . The back of the head ( occiput ) is brown and the crown ( vertex ) green.

Construction of the larva

The light brown larva measures around 17.5 millimeters and becomes approximately 6.5 millimeters wide at the widest point, the fifth to sixth segment of the abdomen. The larva has no dorsal hooks and only lateral thorns on the ninth segment. Overall, the top of the abdomen is covered with evenly distributed hairs that only condense at the segment edges. The hind wing sheath extends to the middle of the sixth segment.

The legs are also there, although the hair is much more pronounced here. The femora of the rear pair of legs measure 5.25 millimeters, the rear tibia are about as long as they are wide and measure 5.5 millimeters.

The head is 5.6 millimeters wide and roughly twice as long.

The sides of the head initially run at an angle, then sharply bent to converge behind the eyes. The lower lip ( labium ) extends to the coxae of the middle pair of legs. There are thirteen hairs on the Mentum , which is about as long as it is wide .

Spread and time of flight

The species is common in the northern United States and Canada . It flies between May and August.
