Heliothis nubigera , also known as the southern blossom owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 30 to 41 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies from whitish beige to yellowish or brownish tones. The drawing is usually indistinct. Only the brownish kidney defects stand out a bit. They run into the costal shadow. The ring flaw is filled in gray. Flaws are short and only faintly visible. Cross and wavy lines are blurred. Occasionally the post- fiscal region is darkened. A black central spot and a broad, dark band with light fringes can be seen on the yellow-gray hind wings.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are red-brown in color, show a dark back line as well as black-and-white spotted secondary lines and indistinct side stripes.

Similar species

  • Heliothis peltigera shows more distinctive markings and darker hind wings. The distinct kidney defects are associated with the anterior margin.
  • The cotton capsule owl ( Helicoverpa armigera ) is lighter and less contrasting in color.

distribution and habitat

Heliothis nubigera has a paleosubtropical distribution. She is an occasional immigrant north across the Alps and flies as far as the UK . The warmth-loving species occurs mainly on warm slopes, on hot wasteland and in gardens.

Way of life

The moths that immigrated from the south cannot reproduce north of the Alps because they cannot survive the winter in Central Europe . In southern Europe, the moths can be found in several generations from April to November. The caterpillars feed polyphagous on various plants. These include yoke leaf ( Zygophyllum ), ball thistle ( Echinops ) and honeysuckle species ( Lonicera ). The species overwinters as a pupa .

Danger

Heliothis nubigera very seldom flies into Germany as a migrant butterfly and has only been detected in a few federal states. Older reports from Baden-Württemberg turned out to be incorrect determinations.
