Helldorado (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helldorado is a real-time strategy game from the German developer Spellbound and was released for Windows in June 2007 . It was originally planned as an expansion to the game Desperados 2 published via Atari . After differences between the two companies, however, it then appeared under a new name via the German publisher dtp entertainment . Despite the name change, it continues the plot of Desperados 2 immediately.

action

The game starts just weeks after defeating the corrupt railroad magnate Lloyd Goodman. His widow has Doc McCoy kidnapped and injected with a poison that will stealthily kill him - unless Cooper, Doc, and the rest of the group do some jobs for Mrs. Goodman. These are spread over twelve missions, including the raid on a state arms transport and a gold warehouse, with locations in New Orleans , Santa Fe and the village of Blackwater. In the course of the game it becomes clear that Cooper's orders are part of a deceitful plan by the Mexican revolutionary El Cortador to assassinate the President of the United States .

development

The game was originally supposed to appear as an expansion to Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge and was presented under the title Desperados 2: Conspiracy at the Games Convention , among others . It should deliver the movie mode already promised for the main part. Combo actions between two player characters have also been introduced as a new feature, such as the shooting of gas arrows in collaboration with Doc and Hawkeye. In January 2007, the name change and the end of the business relationship with Atari became known. Like Desperados 2 , the game is based on Trinigy's vision engine. SpeedTree was used as middleware . Development work was completed at the end of May 2007.

The game received mixed reviews ( Metacritic : 65 out of 100).

“Challenging strategy games are always appreciated, but Helldorado takes a good thing too far. The difficulty is so extreme that just the act of starting a new level can be depressing, especially after you pan the camera over the landscape to reveal the dozens of enemies that need to be sneaked past or knocked out. Only players who have experience with the Desperados franchise or its inspirations, such as the Commandos franchise, need apply here. "

“Challenging strategy games are always welcome, but Helldorado spans the curve. The level of difficulty is so extreme that even the process of starting the level is not oppressive, especially when you pan the camera over the landscape and reveal dozens of enemies that have to be sneaked around or eliminated. Only players with experience with the Desperados franchise or its intellectual predecessors, such as the Commandos series, have to volunteer. "
