Hellmut Butterweck (* 1927 in Vienna ) is an Austrian science journalist and theater critic.

Life

Shaped by his experience as a slave laborer in the German armaments industry , he wrote numerous essays, glosses, satires and reports against anti-democratic, anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi tendencies after the war, published a. a. in the Austrian weekly newspaper Die Furche . Until 1992 he was a theater critic and head of the science and contemporary history department, and after his retirement he was still in charge of the book department.

From the early 1960s Hellmuth Butterweck wrote plays, radio plays and books. In 1982 the “Miracle of Vienna” was premiered in the Theater in der Josefstadt and translated into Hebrew and Russian and in 2005 his scenic documentation “Three Years for a Tooth” was shown in the large jury court room in Vienna, in Mauthausen and Ebensee , at concentration camp locations in the Nazi era. His books, too, are characterized by dealing with inhumanity as a central theme: for example, “Convicted and pardoned - Austria and its Nazi criminals”, “The Nuremberg Trial. A demystification ”, the novel“ Dead in Interrogation ”about the first Austrian miscarriage of justice with an anti-Semitic background after the Second World War, or“ The Revenge of Money - From Limits to Growth and the End of Neoliberalism ”. In 2016 “National Socialists before the People's Court ” appeared; Hellmuth Butterweck not only created a very vivid picture of a highly emotional, but almost completely forgotten confrontation of the Austrian judiciary with Nazi crimes, but also opened up a surprisingly new perspective on everyday life during the Nazi era.
