Helmut Anthony Hatzfeld

Helmut Anthony Hatzfeld (born November 4, 1892 in Bad Dürkheim , † May 18, 1979 in Washington, DC ) was a German Romance philologist , literary scholar and linguist with American citizenship. He worked particularly in the field of stylistics .

life and work

After studying in Munich, Grenoble, Berlin and Edinburgh, Hatzfeld received his doctorate in linguistics in 1915 with Karl Vossler in Munich and later qualified in literature with Matthias Friedwagner in Frankfurt . He was appointed to Heidelberg as an associate professor (with the rank of personal ordinariate) , because of his (a quarter) Jewish descent, he was forced out of office by the National Socialists and left Heidelberg in November 1938. He went to Belgium ( Catholic University of Leuven ) USA and taught at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC from 1940 to 1962
