Matthias Friedwagner (born February 3, 1861 in Gallspach ; † April 5, 1940 ibid) was an Austrian Romanist and Romanist.

life and work

After attending elementary school in Gallspach (1867–73) Friedwagner attended secondary school in Linz , where he graduated in 1880. In 1881 he also passed the high school diploma in Linz and then studied German and Romance languages ​​in Vienna. There he received his doctorate in 1889 with the work on the language of the old French heroic poem Huon de Bordeaux (Paderborn 1891). From 1888 to 1900 he was a secondary school teacher in Vienna. He completed his habilitation in 1898 at the University of Vienna . From 1900 to 1911 he was the successor of Theodor Gartner full professor for Romance philology at the University of Czernowitz (1903 dean, 1910 rector), then as successor to Heinrich Morf from 1911 to 1928 at the University of Frankfurt (1916 dean). He obtained his habilitation from Helmut Anthony Hatzfeld and Hellmuth Petriconi . Matthias Friedwagner was married to Hermine Richter (1867–1932), who was born in Vienna. The couple were buried in a private crypt in a wooded area between Gallspach and Grieskirchen, which is freely accessible.
