Basil of Repta
Basil Vladimir Ritter von Repta (born January 6, 1842 in Moldavian Banilla , † April 24, 1926 in Chernivtsi ) was a theologian of the Greek Orthodox Church. As a university lecturer and member of parliament, he shaped intellectual and political life in the “Far East” of Austria-Hungary for decades.
Life
Repta first studied at the theological college in Chernivtsi. For further studies he went to the University of Vienna , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and the University of Zurich .
In 1873 he returned to the Imperial and Royal High School in Chernivtsi as a professor for Biblical History and Biblical Exegesis of the New Testament . At its inception it called the Franz Joseph's University as o. Professor of New Testament . For more than 20 years he was inspector of the elementary schools in the crown land of Bukovina . In 1878/79, 1885/86 and 1893/94 he was Dean of the Greek Orthodox Faculty. In 1883/84 he was rector of the flourishing multi-ethnic university.
In 1896 he was appointed vicar of the Archdiocese of Czernowitz, founded in 1873, and in 1898 titular bishop of Radautz . From 1902 to 1924 he was Archbishop of Chernivtsi, Metropolitan of Bukovina and Dalmatia .
Sent to the Reichsrat (Austria) from 1901 to 1907 , Repta sat in the 10th Bucovinian state parliament from 1904 . With little success he tried to mediate in the dispute between national Romanian , Ukrainian and Russophile Orthodox. At the time of the Russian occupation of Chernivtsi in the First World War in 1916, he was relieved of office after the city was conquered by Eduard von Böhm-Ermolli and exiled to Prague . In 1918 he was able to return at the age of 76. For fear of Russia , the annexation of the Bukovina to the Kingdom of Romania was declared on November 28, 1918 in his residence . The resolution subsequently sanctioned in the Treaty of Saint-Germain also brought the end of the Franz Joseph University.
