Helmut Bönnemann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Bönnemann ( November 7, 1939 - March 30, 2017 ) was a German chemist .

Life

Bönnemann studied chemistry at RWTH Aachen . He completed his studies with a thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr . He completed his dissertation in the working group of Günther Wilke and received his doctorate in 1967. After completing his habilitation in 1976, he worked for Degussa in industry before returning to RWTH as an adjunct professor in 1981. In 2001 he became an Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town . At the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research he was working group leader for heterogeneous catalysis until 2004 . In 2005 he took over the management of the nanochemical laboratory at the Karlsruhe Research Center for three years . Bönnemann was also editor of the journal " Applied Organometallic Chemistry ".

His research focus was initially on the preparation of pyridines by cobalt-catalyzed synthesis from alkynes and nitriles ( Bönnemann synthesis ) and the control of selectivity by varying the ligand properties.

Later he focused his research on the investigation of the catalytic properties of nanometals and clusters in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.
