Helmut Boseck (born October 14, 1931 in Haida, Nový Bor , Czech Republic; † February 20, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German mathematician. His research area was algebra , especially topology and Lie theory .

life and work

After the family moved to Berlin in 1936, Boseck passed the matriculation examination at the Eosander High School in Berlin-Pankow in 1949. In the same year he began to study meteorology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and also heard lectures by Hans Ertel , Heinrich Grell , Friedrich Neiß and Rudolf Ritschl . After the second semester, Boseck switched to the mathematics department and studied with Hermann Ludwig Schmid , H. Grell, Hans Reichardt , Kurt Schröder and Friedrich Possible . After completing his diploma thesis ( on the theory of automorphisms of algebraic function bodies ) in 1953, he was given a permanent position as an assistant at the 1st Mathematical Institute and, in addition to research, was mainly responsible for seminars on lectures by Grell and Reichardt; from 1956 he also gave lectures in algebra himself . After completing his dissertation ( on the theory of Weierstraßpunkte ) with H. Reichardt in 1959, Boseck went to Moscow for a whole year, then continued research at the Humboldt University until he completed his habilitation thesis ( representation of matrix groups over topological bodies ) in 1963, whose topic Israel M. Gelfand had suggested. In the same year Boseck became a lecturer at the Mathematics Institute of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald and in 1965 a full professor for algebra and functional analytical applications . In the Greifswald years, Boseck wrote several widely read textbooks on vector and tensor calculus, and he also translated monographs from Russian. His research focused on topology , especially Lie theory . This mathematics rubric is used in theoretical atomic physics.

After the end of the GDR, Boseck was involved in the restructuring of the mathematics institute and was its director from 1990 to 1996. H. Boseck and KH Hofmann (Darmstadt) founded the "Seminar Sophus Lie" in 1991, a conference on Lie theory that initially only took place in Germany and is now held throughout Europe. The journal of Lie theory (the original name was also Seminar Sophus Lie ) was co-founded, and Boseck was one of the editors for the first decade. H. Boseck retired in 1997.
