Helmut Giegler

Helmut Giegler (born July 28, 1947 in Fürth ; † June 10, 2017 in Hamburg ) was a German sociologist , university professor and empirical social researcher. His main research interests and interests lay in the areas of methodology of computer-aided empirical social research , the sociology of lifestyles, leisure and mass media, social structure analysis and political sociology.

Live and act

Giegler studied sociology, philosophy and psychology at the University of Hamburg and was awarded a doctorate there in 1978 (according to another source: 1980). phil. PhD. From 1980 to 1985 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen ; In 1986 he received his habilitation there. After brief teaching activities at the University of Bremen (1987–1988, 1989–1991) and the University of Hamburg (1988–1989), he held a professorship for methods of empirical social research at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1991 to 1994 . On August 1, 1994, he was appointed to the chair for sociology and empirical social science at the University of Augsburg . Giegler had been retired since April 2010 and lived in Hamburg again. He died in June 2017 at the age of 69.
