Helmut König (medalist)

Helmut König (born October 1, 1934 in Milan , Italy ; † March 24, 2017 in Zella-Mehlis ) was a Thuringian medalist and engraver .

Life

König was born as the son of the master precision mechanic Willy König on October 1st, 1934 in Milan. After attending primary school in Zella-Mehlis , Thuringia, he learned the profession of hunting gun engraver from 1949. This was followed by training as a steel die cutter until 1952. Helmut König passed the master craftsman examination in 1962 after working as an engraver in various companies . He lived in Zella-Mehlis until his death on March 24, 2017.

Act

König had been an independent craftsman since 1972. He created his first medal in 1974 on behalf of the Kulturbund der DDR . In 1977, König was awarded the GDR title “Recognized Artisan”.

In 1986 he was accepted into the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and in 1989 into the Association of Visual Artists Thuringia. V., Erfurt . As a die cutter and medalist, König produced over 2000 embossed medals, mostly on his own 200-ton press, such as the gold medal of the Goethe Society in Weimar for decades . Helmut König's medal designs can now be found in numerous exhibitions and museums, such as the medal with the portrait of Friedrich Schiller after David d'Angers , which he created on the 175th anniversary of the poet's death, and the 1994 inclusion in the collection of the Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden found. In 2011, König was involved in the collective exhibition The German Contemporary Art Medal of the Dresden State Art Collection, which was shown in the Hausmannsturm . Helmut König is considered the old master of the tradition of southern Thuringia medal minting.
