life and work

Koch studied from 1952 to 1957 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1957 to 1959 he worked at the Teltow semiconductor plant. From 1959 he was a member of the Institute for Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , where he received his doctorate in 1964 and completed his habilitation in 1965. He studied with Hans Reichardt and Igor Schafarewitsch (1960/61 in Moscow ). From 1969 to 1991 he was head of the research group "Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory" at the Institute for Mathematics and from 1992 to 1996 head of a corresponding working group at Humboldt University, where he has been a professor since 1992. He was on research stays at Russian universities and institutes in Moscow, Saint Petersburg , Novosibirsk and at the universities of Paris , Montreal , Edmonton , Cambridge , the ETH Zurich , the Banach Center in Warsaw and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn .

Koch dealt u. a. with the Galois theory of number fields (the topic of his dissertation: Galois theory of p-adic number fields ), p-extensions of number fields, cubic number fields and class field theory.

He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and is a member of the Academy for Natural Scientists Leopoldina , the Academia Europaea , the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . Until 1993 he was editor of the Mathematische Nachrichten .
