Helmut Sies (born March 28, 1942 in Goslar ) is a German physician, biochemist and university professor. Among other things, he dealt with the role of oxidative stress and micronutrients in preventing cancer.

Life

He studied medicine at the University of Tübingen, the University of Munich and in Paris. In 1967 he received his doctorate summa cum laude at the University of Munich , where he was assistant in the Faculty of Physiological Chemistry from 1968. In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Munich. In 1974 he became a scientific councilor and in 1978 an extraordinary professor. From 1979 he was a professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . In 2008 he retired . He was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley , the University of Texas , the Heart Research Institute in Sydney, in Siena and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Since 2008 he has been Professor of Biology and Biochemistry at King Saud University in Riyadh.

He was particularly concerned with biological oxidation processes, and is considered to be the inventor of the term oxidative stress in 1985, and has worked on antioxidants , biochemical pharmacology and toxicology , biochemistry of food and biochemistry of liver and skin. In particular, he dealt with nutrients that mediate protection against cancer. He found that lycopene , which is particularly common in tomatoes, acts as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. He also found that lycopene and other carotenoids, as well as some flavonoids, protect the skin from the sun's UV rays. He also examined artificial antioxidants made from a combination of the basic structures of carotenoids and flavonoids ( flavocarotenoids ).

He published over 500 scientific papers (2011).

Awards and memberships

In 1988 he received the Ernst Jung Prize . In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires. In 1999 he received the Werner Heisenberg Medal of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and in 1986 the silver medal of the Karolinska Institute. Since 1991 he has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts , since 2000 a member of the Leopoldina and a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) . The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences it belongs since 1991 as a corresponding member.
