Helmut Wachter

Helmut Wachter (born September 3, 1929 in Landeck (Tyrol) , † January 21, 2012 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian pharmacist and doctor. At the University of Innsbruck he was full professor of medicinal chemistry and biochemistry.

Life

Helmut Wachter completed his pharmacy studies in Innsbruck in 1954 and received his doctorate in 1956 at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In parallel to the subsequent partial course in medicine, he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Chemistry and Biochemistry, which Wachter later took over and held for several periods. Since 1952 he was a member of the Corps Gothia .

One focus of his work was the identification of neopterin and, subsequently, its research as a diagnostic parameter. The determination of neopterin increased u. a. blood transfusion safety and has become a prognostic parameter in patients with HIV-1 infection. In 1966 he received the license to teach “Medicinal Chemistry” and “Biochemistry for Medicines” and was chairman of the overall study committee of the Austrian medical faculties. In the course of his life Wachter was able to show more than 700 scientific publications, his textbook "Chemistry for Medicine", written together with Arno Hausen, appeared in 6 editions. From 1986 to 1996, Wachter and Manfred P. Dierich headed the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for AIDS Research at the University of Innsbruck . In 1994 he and his wife donated the Ilse and Helmut Wachter Prize to promote medical research for the common good of humanity.

Due to his services to the University of Innsbruck, the funeral service for Helmut Wachter took place in the University Church on Innrain in Innsbruck.
