Helmuth Schattovits

Helmuth Schattovits (born July 14, 1939 in Edlitz in Burgenland, German Schützen-Eisenberg ; † September 10, 2015 ) was an Austrian business economist and association official.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1957, Helmuth Schattovits studied business administration with the school brothers in Vienna-Strebersdorf at the Technical University of Vienna . During his studies he was chairman of the Austrian student body at the TU Vienna. He was promoted to Dr. techn. doctorate and was then university assistant at the Institute for Industrial Engineering. In 1969/70 he was the office manager of the then Minister of Education, Alois Mock .

From 1970 to 1978 he was President of the Catholic Family Association of Austria (KFÖ) . In 1983 he became head of the Institute for Marriage and Family (IEF) of the Austrian Bishops' Conference and in 1994 he became founder and managing director of the Austrian Institute for Family Research (ÖIF) . In 2001 he retired.

Schattovits played a key role in shaping Austrian family policy for several decades. He is considered to be the founder of academic family research at Austrian universities. He was considered the "father of child care allowance". He was committed to four years of pension entitlement for care and support, a regular valorisation of family benefits, anchoring the family in the constitution and took a resolute stand against discrimination against large families. He was the initiator and co-founder of the BROT community ("praying-speaking-being-open-sharing"), a new form of living together. In 1989 he was coordinator and co-author of the Austrian family report "Lebenswelt Familie" and in 1994 coordinator of the Austrian National Committee for the preparation of the International Year of the Family and author of the summarizing outlook "Family program for Austria - a solidarity pact". In 1998 he was appointed professor for his commitment.

Pope John Paul II called him together with his wife Renate to the Pontifical Council for the Family .

Since his studies he was a member of the Catholic student association K.Ö.HV Amelungia in the ÖCV .
