Hementerin is a metalloprotease found in the saliva of a hematophagous leech called Haementeria depressa . The enzyme is responsible for anticoagulation after the bite , thus extending the duration of blood sucking on a host . It was discovered by Gastão Rosenfeld in 1955 at the Instituto Butantan in São Paulo .

function

As a protease , the enzyme is able to break down plasma proteins that play an important role in blood clotting . Fibrinogen , for example, is a plasma protein . After the enzyme has broken down the fibrin , the subunits of the fibrinogen are split: FGA ( fibrinogen alpha chain ), FGB ( fibrinogen beta chain ) and FGG ( fibrinogen gamma chain ). The lack of these fibrinogens in the blood plasma inhibits blood clotting (anticoagulation). In addition, the enzyme may be the platelet aggregation inhibiting, which by activation of nitric oxide - biosynthesis ( NO synthases ) through the collagen takes place. The fibrinolytic activity is inhibited by EDTA .

Amino acid sequence

The amino acid sequence of the hementerin looks like this according to the one -letter code :

        10 20 30
XTLSEPEPTC SIEYFRYQAI EDCEYSISVK
