Hemimellitic (1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid) is next to the trimellitic acid (1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid) and trimesic acid (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic) one of three possible position isomers of benzene tricarboxylic acids .

The common name is derived from mellitic acid (benzene hexacarboxylic acid), which in turn was isolated from mellit ( honey stone ). The syllable hemi- denotes half of the substituents .
