Hendrik Dirk Kruseman van Elten

Hendrik Dirk Kruseman van Elten (born November 14, 1829 in Alkmaar , † July 12, 1904 in Paris ) was a Dutch landscape painter , etcher and lithographer .

Life

After attending school in Haarlem, Kruseman devoted himself to art with the landscape painter Cornelis Lieste and studied nature on frequent excursions. After five years he traveled to Germany , Switzerland and Tyrol , then continued his studies in Brussels and initially settled in Amsterdam .

In 1865 he turned to New York , used the sketches he had brought with him from Holland and increased them through incessant landscape studies. From 1870 to 1873 he visited Europe again .

In 1883, Hendrik Dirk Kruseman van Elten was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .

Works

His brightly colored landscapes are faithful, atmospheric replicas of nature; among the best of these from his first (Dutch) period are:

  • Early morning in the woods
  • Sunday morning
  • Landscape in Gelderland
  • The grove in the heather
  • Lot from the Harz

From the later period:

  • Night falls in the Shawagunk Mountains
  • Mood pictures
  • Tomorrow in the meadows
  • Landscape on the Farmington River, Connecticut
  • Dusk near Kulmbach
