Hendrik Laurenszoon Spiegel (born March 11, 1549 in Amsterdam , † January 4, 1612 in Alkmaar ) was a Dutch poet and humanist .
Life
Spiegel was the son of Laurens Pietersz Spiegel and his wife Anna (nee Gaaf Jansdaughter) and the brother of Jan Laurensz. Mirror. He was raised a Catholic and in 1578 objected to the city's transition to Calvinism . He was supposed to be a professor of the Roman religion, but decided on a career as a businessman. In 1589 he was appointed to the council of the Admiralty in Hoorn, but he refused to take over this office despite threatened coercive measures. He stood firm, although in The Hague he was sentenced to donate to the poor house for his demeanor. He was influenced by the Dutch humanist Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert . In his work Nieuwe Jaerslieden (1578–1608) he attacked tyranny.
Like Coornhert and Roemer Visscher (1547-1620) he was a member of the Amsterdam "Rederijkerkammer", where he was responsible for the preparation of the textbooks that dealt with Dutch orthography. Including the work: Tweespraack van de Nederduytsche Letterkunst (1584). In 1591 he arranged for the old rhyming chronicle to be printed by Melis Stoke at his own expense. His most important work is Hertspiegel (1614). In this long poem he unfolds his philosophical views and religious convictions. Another of his works is the unfinished song op't Vader Ons . Spiegel was a member of the movement that promoted the Dutch language and published his opinion on the importance of this language in the dialogue on Dutch literature (1584).
