life and work

Henman Offenburg, son of a pharmacist from a Basel family of Achtburger, worked as a businessman. During the council in Constance he ran a bank. In 1417 King Sigismund , whom he advised on financial matters, gave him a coat of arms and the title of knight . In 1433 Sigismund, who had just been crowned emperor, made him a knight. In 1437 he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land , where he was made Knight of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Henman Offenburg was a member of the Small Council in Basel from 1406 - first as a guild representative, then as a representative of the Achtburger and from 1435 as a knight - until his death and held the dignity of chief guild master four times. In addition, he was entrusted with diplomatic missions several times by his hometown, but also by the Basel Council and by Emperor Sigismund. Due to his Austrian fiefdom, he was temporarily excluded from the council in 1445. During this time he wrote an autobiographical justification in which he reviewed the years 1413 to 1445.
