Henner Hess (born January 12, 1940 in Olomouc ) is a German criminologist and sociologist .

Life

He studied sociology in Heidelberg, Lexington and Paris. After a doctorate (1967) and habilitation (1976), he initially held the chair for criminology at the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht (from 1979) . In 1982 he followed an appointment as professor for social education at the University of Frankfurt am Main . Since 2001 - and after his retirement (2005) - he has also been director of the Center for Drug Research there . In addition to the drug problem, other focal points of his work were and are criminological theory, the history and future of social control and terrorism. For his book Mafia (Tübingen 1970, since then 12 editions in 4 languages) he received the literary prizes Premio Nazionale Iglesias 1973 and Premio Nazionale Empedocle 1982. In 1997, Hess wrote together with Sebastian Scheerer the sketch of a constructivist crime theory . Together with Scheerer, he is now considered an opposition to the German-language critical criminology , because he no longer exclusively refers to the labeling approach.

Hess is co-founder and director of the “Center for Drug Research” (CDR) and also a member of the Schildower Kreis , an expert network that argues against drug prohibition .
