Wall-trench system of the Landwehr

The Hennethaler Landwehr is a late medieval moat in the forest on the "Platte" near Hohenstein - Hennethal in the Untertaunus , in the Rheingau-Taunus district . It served to secure Limburger Strasse (Altstrasse) and was only rediscovered in 2003.

Location and description

Defile the Limburg street at the hen Thaler Landwehr

The system is located between the villages of Daisbach , Hennethal and Kettenbach , around 300 m southwest of the connection between the L 3032 and the L 3031. The ditch-wall system itself is around 325 m long. It lies on the plate , a local planarization area. The trench wall system is 8 m wide on average. A wall about 1.0 m to 1.5 m high is preceded by trenches on both sides, each 0.3 m to 0.5 m deep. In the west there was probably a blow , that is, a customs post. The remains of former hedge trees can also be found on the wall .

It is located on the historical Limburger Strasse (1701 referred to as Limburgerstrasse ), which from the late Middle Ages to modern times , ie from the 14th to the 18th century, connected Limburg via the Zollhaus iron mining area to Eisenstrasse and the Rhine-Main area . Between Kettenbach and Daisbach, it crossed the Scheidertal, where a corresponding road was only built in 1897.

There are also several kiln sites in the area of the facility .

It is still unknown who had the Landwehr built, as no written evidence can be found today. Both the Counts of Nassau-Idstein and the Counts of Katzenelnbogen , who owned the nearby Holzhausen, come into question.

Today a historical educational trail with four information boards leads through the complex. Nearby is the Rahnstätter Hof desert .

Monument protection

The area of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
