Henning Luther
Henning Luther (born August 31, 1947 in Lüneburg ; † July 31, 1991 in Marburg ) was Professor of Practical Theology at the Department of Protestant Theology at Philipps University in Marburg.
Life
Henning Luther studied Protestant theology in Bethel , Heidelberg and Mainz from 1966 to 1972 , followed by a degree in pedagogy from 1971 to 1978. After studying theology, he began a doctoral project in Mainz with Gert Otto . In 1976 he received his doctorate summa cum laude . The title of his dissertation “Science as a communicative educational process. The reform of theology studies in the context of a discursive university didactics “already showed a central concept of his work: education .
In 1972 Luther married Renate Clabes, who died in 1981. Death, especially in the context of pastoral care , became another of Luther's themes.
In 1975 Luther began his vicariate in Gemünden (Westerwald) and was ordained in Mainz in 1979 .
In 1982 Luther completed his habilitation with the dissertation “Religion - Subject - Education. Basic concepts of adult education using the example of Friedrich Niebergall's practical theology ”. The theology of Friedrich Niebergall was one of the formative influences alongside the theology of his teacher Gert Otto and the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas . The subject and its individuation were further key points of his theological work.
In the following time Luther taught as a private lecturer in Mainz until he was appointed professor for practical theology at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1986 . In doing so, he taught in the very same department in which Niebergall had already worked. Especially the correlation between Luther as a theologian, with the Critical Theory Adorno was familiar and its theological application by his teacher Gert Otto as a "critical theory religiously mediated practice", and a faculty that much of the ideas of the 68s was influenced, proved mutually fruitful. So it is remarkable that the Marburg student council, which otherwise maintained a clear distance from the lecturers, financially supported the posthumous essay volume "Religion and Everyday Life".
Henning Luther died in 1991 after a long illness and was buried in the cemetery in the Marburg district of Ockershausen .
