Henri Charles Antoine Baron (born June 23, 1816 in Besançon , † September 11, 1885 in Geneva ) was a French genre painter, lithographer, draftsman and illustrator.

Henri Baron was a student of Jean-François Gigoux . He made his debut in 1840 at the Salon de Paris and received several awards over the next few years. In 1846 the Duke Henri d'Orléans ordered the painting "Chantilly Castle in the 16th Century" which was intended for Chantilly Castle .

He visited Italy regularly and also went on study trips to Greece and North Africa .

In 1852 he married Octavie Bovy, the daughter of the Swiss sculptor Antoine Bovy (1795–1877). After the marriage he moved to Geneva. Thanks to this family bond, Baron took part in the restoration of the decoration of the Gruyères castle in the canton of Friborg .

His works have also been exhibited frequently in the Salon de Lyon. From 1862 Henri Baron took part in the “Society of Friends of the Arts” (Société des Amis des arts) in Besançon. This was founded in 1857 by his artist friend Jacques Alfred van Muyden and August Turrettini.

In addition to painting, Baron also dealt with lithography, often based on his early works. He also provided illustrations for books and magazines.

He worked regularly with François-Louis Français (1814–1897), with whom he co-signed some paintings and co-founded the magazine "Les artistes contemporains".

From 1879 he took part in the exhibitions of the Société des Aquaristes français . Baron was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
