Henri Gavel

Henri Gavel (born May 22, 1880 in Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise , † October 15, 1959 in Anglet ) was a French Romance scholar , Hispanist, Occitanist and Bascologist .

life and work

Gavel grew up in Rouen until 1895 , then in Guéret and Clermont-Ferrand . He obtained his license for German in Poitiers (1900) and for Spanish in Toulouse (1901). In 1902 he was the first French Agrégé for Spanish. Then he was briefly a high school teacher for German in Saint-Etienne (1903) and from 1903 to 1930 for Spanish in Bayonne . There he came into contact with Basque language. In 1921 he completed his habilitation in Toulouse with the two Thèses Essai sur l'évolution de la prononciation du Castillan depuis le XIVe siècle, d'après les théories des grammairiens et quelques autres sources (Paris 1920) and Eléments de phonétique basque (Paris / Biarritz 1920 ). From 1930 to 1948 he was the successor to Joseph Anglade holder of the chair for Romance Philology at the University of Toulouse . From 1936 to 1939 he also taught Basque in Bordeaux.
