Henri Zeller (born March 18, 1896 in Besançon , Doubs département , † April 16, 1971 in Paris ) was a French Général d'armée , who was last military governor of Paris from 1953 to 1957 .

Life

Zeller was a son of Général de division Léon Zeller and the older brother of General André Zeller . He completed an officer training and was an officer in various units of the army (Armée de terre) and took part in the First World War. He was Deputy Chief of the First Bureau in the Grand Headquarters and in 1944 became the commander of the troops in the Alps military district and then chief of staff at the military delegate in the southern military district. On December 25, 1944, he was promoted to Général de brigade . As such, in 1945 he was first deputy chief of the army staff and then commandant (commandant en chef) of the 16th military region.

On February 16, 1946, Zeller became Chief of the Army Staff EMAT (Chef d'état-major de l'Armée de terre) and held this position until April 28, 1948. During this time, on December 20, 1946, he became the General de division promoted. On April 28, 1948 he was chief of the staff of the armed forces (Chef d'état-Major général des forces armées) and received on June 6, 1949 his promotion to the Général de corps d'armée . On April 1, 1950, he became head of the reorganized United Staff of the Armed Forces (Chef d'état-Major combiné des forces armées) and held this position until he was replaced by Lieutenant General Charles Léchères on August 20, 1951.

Zeller, who had also been a member of the Supreme Military Council since January 1, 1951, then served from August 20, 1951 to April 1, 1953 as the military governor of Metz and as the commander of the 16th military region. On April 1, 1953 he succeeded General René Jean-Charles Chouteau as military governor of Paris (Gouverneur militaire de Paris) and was promoted as such on January 1, 1956 to the Général d'armée. On September 24, 1957, he was adopted into retirement and replaced as military governor of Paris by General Louis-Constant Morlière .

Zeller, who was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor (Grand-croix de la Légion d'Honneur) among other things , succeeded Major General Henri-Emile-Louis Rouvillois as President of the Society of Members of the Legion of Honor (Société des membres de la Légion ) in 1961 d'honneur) and held this position until his death in 1971. His successor was then Marcel Flouret .
