Henrique Oswald (born April 14, 1852 in Rio de Janeiro , † June 9, 1931 ibid) was a Brazilian composer and diplomat.

Life

Henrique was the only son of the Swiss emigrant Hans Jakob (Jean-Jacques) Oswald (1805–1878) from Oberaach TG and his wife Maria Charlotta Louise Oratia Cantagalli (1816–1903) from Livorno / Italy; called 'Carlota'.

Oswald had been a student of the pianist Giuseppe Buonamici in Florence since 1868 . He then became Vice Consul in Le Havre and later in Genoa . From 1903 to 1906 he was director of the Instituto Nacional de Música in Rio de Janeiro. Then he was again in the diplomatic service. From 1911 he lived as a teacher and composer in Rio de Janeiro. In 1881 Henrique Oswald married Laudômia Gasperini (1859-1932), daughter of Ottavio Gasperini (director of the Florence Educational Institute) and Maria Bombernard. The two had five children; u. a. Carlos Oswald (1882–1971), painter and engraver in Pétropolis-Rio de Janeiro and Br. Alfredo Oswald SJ (1884–1972).

In addition to numerous chamber music works, Henrique composed three operas , a symphony , a piano and a violin concerto, piano works and songs .
