Henry A. Pochmann
Henry August Pochmann (born January 5, 1901 in Round Top , Texas ; † January 13, 1973 in Nacogdoches , Texas) was an American literary scholar, who particularly emerged with work on German-American cultural exchange.
Life
Pochmann came from a family of German immigrants and grew up bilingual. He grew up in Texas and studied first at Southwest Texas State Teachers College ( BA 1923), then English at the University of Texas at Austin ( MA 1924). In 1928 he received his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a dissertation on the influence of German romanticism on the short stories of Washington Irving , Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe for Ph.D.
From 1928 taught at Louisiana State University , then in the meantime at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches; from 1936 to 1938 he was Dean of the Graduate School of Mississippi State College . In 1938 he became Professor of English Literature at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . In 1971 he retired.
