Henry Chapman (born February 4, 1804 in Newtown , Bucks County , Pennsylvania , †  April 11, 1891 in Doylestown , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Chapman attended Doylestown Academy and Doctor Gummere's Private Boys' School near Burlington , New Jersey . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1825, he began to work in Doylestown in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1843 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate . Between 1845 and 1849 he served as a judge in the 15th judicial district of his state.

In the congressional election of 1856 , Chapman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Samuel Carey Bradshaw on March 4, 1857 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1858, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

Henry Chapman served as a judge in Bucks County between 1861 and 1871. After that, he retired. He died on April 11, 1891 on the Frosterley estate near Doylestown.
