Henry Darwin Rogers (born August 1, 1806 in Philadelphia , † May 29, 1866 near Glasgow ) was an American geologist, professor and Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Glasgow.

Life

Rogers was educated in his parents' home and studied at the College of William & Mary at Williamsburgh in southeast Virginia , USA. 1930/31 he worked as a professor of chemistry and natural history at Dickinson College in Carlisle . He left the United States to complete his education in London. After his return he lectured at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 1833/34 . From 1835 he held a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania . In the same year he began a geological and mineralogical survey of the Pennsylvania state territory. Recording was suspended from 1841 to 1851 due to a lack of funds. Rogers concluded the interim results with a comprehensive report in 1840. Rogers worked for various coal mines until he continued to record state geology in 1851. From 1836 to 1842 and again from 1851 to 1854 he was the State Geologist of Pennsylvania . In 1845 Rogers was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 1855 he went to Edinburgh , where he completed the last part of his geological work, The Geology of Pennsylvania, a Government Survey .

From 1857 until his death in 1866 he was Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Glasgow . In 1856 he was accepted as an honorary member ( Honorary Fellow ) in the Royal Society of Edinburgh . Henry Darwin's brother, William Barton Rogers, was the founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .
