Henry Edward Colville

Sir Henry Edward Colville KCMG ( July 10, 1852 - November 25, 1907 ) was a British colonial official and officer , major-general , in Uganda .

Colville was the British Commissioner in Uganda from November 4, 1893 to May 10, 1895. In December 1893 he led the military offensive against the place Mparo and the resident Omukama of Bunyoro , Kabalega .

Colville attacked Mparo with 450 soldiers from Sudan , 20,000 fighters from Buganda and eight British officers. In the face of this overwhelming power, Kabalega set the place on fire and subsequently switched to guerrilla tactics .

In August 1894, Colville declared Uganda a protected area .

On July 5, 1895, Queen Victoria elevated him to the rank of personal nobility as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George .
