Henry Friesen
Henry George Friesen (born July 31, 1934 in Morden , Manitoba ) is a Canadian endocrinologist , doctor, innovator and a professor at the University of Manitoba . He discovered the human pituitary hormone prolactin .
Life
Henry Friesen studied at the University of Manitoba and began doing research in endocrinology at the New England Medical Center in Boston after graduating from Manitoba . After a year at Tufts University School of Medicine , Friesen worked at McGill University from 1965 to 1973 . He then returned to Manitoba, where he became Professor of Physiology at the University of Manitoba . It was there that Henry Friesen discovered the hormone prolactin in humans and became known for researching the role of this hormone in health and disease: Friesen recognized prolactin disorders as one of the main causes of infertility . In collaboration with others, he worked on new therapies and treatments for tens of thousands of women against infertility.
Friesen published more than 400 works and supervised more than 80 postdocs. From 1991 to 1999, Friesen was the seventh President of the Medical Research Council of Canada . Through his speeches he was able to support the research financially. Friesen was also able to establish connections with research institutions. He has received numerous awards for his work and was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2001.

- 2001: Received the Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award
- 2004: Awarded the Order of Manitoba
- 2006: Honored with the Canadian Medical Association
