Henry Giroux

Henry Armand Giroux (born June 18, 1943 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is a socially critical American author and professor of education .

He became known for his criticism of the American school system, his critical pedagogy based on Paulo Freire and his criticism of the representations of young people in popular culture.

From 1968 to 1975 Henry A. Giroux taught history at a high school in Barrington , Rhode Island. After receiving his PhD from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1977 , he became Professor of Education at Boston University . In 1983 he moved to Miami University in Oxford , Ohio , where he also became director of the Center for Education and Cultural Studies. Between 1992 and 2004, he held the Waterbury Chair of Education at Penn State University . He has been with McMaster University in Ontario since 2004 . Giroux is also a director in the Board of Truthout operates.

Henry A. Giroux wrote over 30 books and numerous articles in magazines and journals. He currently lives in Hamilton , Ontario , Canada with his wife, Susan Searls-Giroux.
