Henry Harford

Henry Harford (born April 5, 1758 in London , † December 8, 1834 ) was the fifth and last Lord Proprietor of the colony of Maryland .

Life

Henry Harford was the illegitimate son of Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore and Hester Whelan. After Frederick Calvert's death in 1771, he inherited a. a. the possession of Maryland, but not the title of Baron Baltimore . With the Maryland Constitution of 1776 , Maryland broke away from Great Britain . Thomas Johnson became Maryland's first elected governor in 1777 . Harford tried from 1783 on site to get his property back. In 1786, the Maryland General Assembly finally rejected his request. Back in England, he received financial compensation of £ 100,000 from the British Parliament for his loss. In 1792 Harford married Louisa Pigou and had 5 children with her, including his future heir Frederick Paul Harford. After her death in 1803, he married Esther Ryecroft in 1806. He had 5 other children with her.
