Henry Nes

Henry Nes (born May 20, 1799 in York , Pennsylvania , †  September 10, 1850 there ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1845 and again from 1847 to 1850 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Nes attended preparatory schools and then studied at Princeton College . After a subsequent medical degree and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in York in this profession. He later embarked on a political career. In the congressional elections of 1842 Nes was elected as an independent Democrat in the 15th  constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Benjamin Alden Bidlack on March 4, 1843 . Until March 3, 1845, he was initially able to complete a legislative period in Congress . That period was fraught with tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs . In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

After the end of his first time in the US House of Representatives, Henry Nes joined the Whigs. In the elections of 1846 he was elected as their candidate in the 15th district of his state in Congress, where he replaced the Democrat Moses McClean on March 4, 1847 , who had become his successor two years earlier. After being re-elected, he was able to exercise this mandate until his death on September 10, 1850. Between 1847 and 1849 he chaired the Committee on Disability Pensions and the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business . Until 1847/1848 his time in Congress was marked by the events of the Mexican-American War . After that, the question of slavery was the focus of discussions.
