Life

Talbot earned a bachelor's degree in analytical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1885 . He first worked as a scientific assistant, then as a lecturer (instructor) for analytical chemistry at MIT, before continuing his studies at the University of Leipzig . In Leipzig in 1890 he obtained a Ph.D. , where he dealt among other things with organic and physical chemistry . Then he worked again as a lecturer at MIT.

In 1892 Talbot received his first professorship (assistant professor) at MIT , in 1895 he became an associate professor . In addition, he lectured at Wellesley College , a private college for women, between 1892 and 1894 . Talbot was one of the first in the United States to introduce a physical chemistry course at MIT. In 1898 he was given a full professorship, and in 1901 he became head of chemistry at MIT. During the First World War he advised the United States Bureau of Mines , a mining authority , and the War Department , where he mainly dealt with poison gas .
