Henry Schmill

Henry Schmill (* in September 1925 in Germany as Otto Hinrich Schmill ; † 14 September 2003 in Essen ) was a German mining engineer and successful entrepreneur in England . He was the founder of Amalgamated Construction Ltd (AMCO) and majority owner of Tolent Construction Ltd.

Life

education

Henry Schmill was born in Germany in 1925 . His father was Otto Schmill, a dairy farmer from Mecklenburg . His mother was Gertrud Alexandrine Schmill, née Hörder. Schmill began his professional career in 1945 as a miner in the Ruhr area . From 1948 to 1952 he studied mining science at the Technical University of Aachen , where he enthusiastically attended the lectures of Carl Hellmut Fritzsche . In 1952, Schmill completed his studies with a degree in engineering and initially worked for Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH .

Professional career in England

In 1963, Henry Schmill went to Thyssen AG as chief engineer at Thyssen Shaft Sinking Ltd in Great Britain . In 1970 Schmill founded his first company in the English Midlands , Amalgamated Construction Ltd (AMCO). The first orders came from the National Coal Board and related to the construction of shafts , tunnels and roads . The company's activities were later expanded to include other fields of engineering , but the focus of the company remained on the mining industry. In the mid-1990s Schmill bought the AIM- listed company Tolent PLC, a competitor of AMCO. In 2002 AMCO and Tolent had total sales of £ 217 million and employed 1,675 people.

Relatives in Germany

On his mother's side, Henry Schmill comes from a long-established family of manufacturers from Greiffenberg in Silesia . Henry Schmill was a nephew of the writer and doctor Carl Hörder , as well as the cousin of the doctor Max-Hermann Hörder .

OH Schmill Medal and AMCO Bursary Fund

OH Schmill Medal

The OH Schmill Medal was donated by Henry Schmill in 1999. The medal is designed on both sides and is awarded at irregular intervals at the discretion of the Council of the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers. The medal is intended to honor people who have made outstanding contributions to the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers.

AMCO Bursary Fund

On November 11th, 1999, the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers decided to set up a scholarship fund. The idea for this came from Henry Schmill, whose Amalgamated Construction Ltd (AMCO) donated £ 100,000 as share capital.
