Henry Tschudy

Henry Tschudy (born August 8, 1882 in Glarus ; † December 26, 1961 in St. Gallen ) was the owner of the H. Tschudy & Co. printing company and publisher of Tschudy-Verlag.

life and work

Henry Tschudy grew up in St. Gallen, where in 1903 he became a partner in the printing works of his stepfather, V. Schmid & Co. In 1917 he took over the company and continued it as H. Tschudy & Co. In 1919, Henry Tschudy was the first publishing project to oversee the reprint of Adalbert Stifter Nachsommer - one of the great educational novels of the 19th century. Since 1938, Tschudy-Verlag has published over 200 titles on classical and contemporary literature, poetry and art.

The entrepreneurial success of the printing company enabled Tschudy-Verlag to take certain risks. The series of arched books, the hortulus or the square books, for the publication of which Tschudy was heavily involved, could be described as such. The 77 numbers in the ‹series of poetic small works› of the sheet books were looked after by Traugott Vogel from 1950–1967 . The series of square books was accompanied by Hans Rudolf Hilty from 1959 to 1964 . Henry Tschudy was on friendly terms with Insel-Verlag in Leipzig and its publisher Anton Kippenberg . The production of the books by Tschudy-Verlag was oriented towards a more functional design, as was known from Insel-Verlag and especially from designer Walter Tiemann . There is also a connection to Insel-Verlag insofar as Henry Tschudy, as one of the first Swiss print shop owners, included fonts by Walter Tiemann, Paul Renner , Rudolf Koch and others in the type sample books of his print shop . a. presented.

Henry Tschudy made the printing company a well-functioning company and an important employer in St. Gallen and, with Tschudy-Verlag, ran a dedicated program for various cultural sectors.
