Traugott Vogel (born February 27, 1894 in Zurich ; † January 31, 1975 there ) was a Swiss writer and educator.

life and work

Born in Zurich-Wiedikon as the son of a vegetable gardener, Traugott Vogel studied German at the universities of Zurich , Geneva and Berlin after graduating , but then attended the teaching college in Zurich and was an elementary school teacher for forty years - with vacation breaks - most recently in Zurich-Letten . Much-read youth books owed their creation to this activity , such as B. Die Spiegelknöpfler , Der Engelkrieg or Der rote Findling , but also a whole series of theater and puppet shows that made him a real pioneer of theDid school theater , which he propagated as an important educational enrichment of the lessons.

“The almost tragic pleasure in storytelling” never let go of him and so, in addition to the work with the children, an extensive work for adults was created: novels and stories , journalistic articles in newspapers and magazines, radio plays and dialect stories . Even his first work, Unsereiner , made people sit up and take notice ; there was talk of a new Swiss verism; Here someone described neither a big city nor an intact village world, but a suburban landscape of clay, gravel pits and reeds. The literary interest in this intermediate world was new. After I love, you love , the blind seer , one of the rare Swiss time novels from the twenties , followed by Anna Foor and, as the last novel, the lost simplicity , experiences and confessions of a teacher. Traugott Vogel's educational concern, which runs through his entire work, was not just a part of Swiss literature, but continued a tradition cultivated since Pestalozzi . In 1975 Vogel's last book Life and Writing was published posthumously , a review of eighty rich, lean years .

Traugott Vogel was also important as a writer friend and promoter of young authors. Many experienced his support, such as Albin Zollinger , Erika Burkart and Ludwig Hohl , for whose financial support and literary recognition he worked tirelessly. He also made a special contribution during the Second World War , when he gave energetic and decisive help to some of those persecuted by the Nazi regime who were stranded in Zurich. B. Lisa Tetzner and her husband Kurt Kläber (Kurt Held). The 77 booklets in the Der Bogen series , which Vogel published in the Tschudy Verlag in St. Gallen from 1950 to 1964 and in which a number of Swiss authors who later became known were given the first opportunity to publish, including Erika Burkart, Hans Boesch and Ernst Eggimann, were a special achievement , Klaus Merz , Jürg Schubiger and Jörg Steiner .
