Wallman studied at Brooklyn College (bachelor's degree in 1933) and received his doctorate in 1937 at Princeton University with Solomon Lefschetz ( Lattices and Topological Spaces ). From 1942 he was at the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked with radar and other things during World War II. He was a radio amateur and co-authored a book on vacuum tubes , which was a standard work at the time. From 1946 he was a professor of mathematics at MIT. In 1948 he was first visiting professor and then professor of electrical engineering at the TH Chalmers in Gothenburg . There he was involved in the construction of an electronic analog computer and in medical technology applications of electronics.

He is co-author of a standard work on topological dimension theory with Witold Hurewicz . Wallman also made important work on the application of topology in lattice theory .

In 1960 he became a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and in 1970 of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering. In 1968 he received an honorary doctorate in medicine from the University of Gothenburg (Sahlgrenska Academy), and in 1980 he received the Chalmers Medal.
