Henry de Lumley-Woodyear (born August 14, 1934 in Marseille ) is a French paleoanthropologist . He became internationally known after numerous fossils of around 450,000 year old individuals of Homo erectus , the so-called hommes de Tautavel ("people of Tautavel") , were discovered under his leadership in the cave of Arago near Tautavel . Furthermore, he was u. a. involved in the research of the petroglyphs in the Vallée des Merveilles and the Grotte du Lazaret near Nice . He is President of the Center Européen de Recherches Préhistoriques in Tautavel.

Henry de Lumley first studied natural sciences in Marseille-Saint Charles and then archeology in Paris , where he received his doctorate in natural sciences in 1965 . Then he went back to Marseille to an institute of the Center national de la recherche scientifique ; In 1977 he was appointed one of the directeurs de recherche there. From 1980 Henry de Lumley was director of the Laboratoire de préhistoire at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and from 1994 until his retirement in 1999 also director of the museum. At times he also headed a working group for Quaternary palaeontology at the Université de Provence . In addition to the excavations in Tautavel, he carried out research in Italy , Spain ( Abric Romaní in Catalonia ), Greece , India , Indonesia , Brazil and Ethiopia (Fejej region, South Omo province).

Since 1999, de Lumley has been a member of the Section des Sciences de l'univers in the Académie des sciences and a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of the Institut de France . He was also awarded the titles of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor , Commandeur de l'Ordre national du Mérite and Chevalier des Arts et Lettres .

Marie-Antoinette de Lumley, the wife of Henry de Lumley, is a physicist and anthropologist and involved in researching the hominine finds of Dmanisi .
