Henryk Bereza (born October 28, 1926 in Miedniewice near Skierniewice , † June 21, 2012 in Warsaw ) was a Polish literary critic . He was associated with the Twórczość magazine from 1951 to 2005 and was one of the most important Polish literary critics of the post-war period.

Life

Bereza attended school in Skierniewice. During the German occupation of Poland, he attended the 1941 trade school . He was also a member of the Armia Krajowa from 1943 to 1944 . After the Second World War , he attended grammar school until 1947 and then studied polonistics at the University of Warsaw . There he obtained his master's degree in 1952 and worked from 1951 to 1954 as a research assistant at the Institute for Polish Literary History. He made his debut as a literary critic in 1951 with the article Literacki obrachunek z socjaldemokracją niemiecką , which appeared in the weekly Wieś . He also began to work with the magazine Nowa Kultura (until 1960) and Twórczość . From 1954 to 1957 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences . During this time he began to work with Nowe Książki (until 1970) and with Przegląd Kulturalny (until 1963) in 1956 . He was then from 1957 to 1959 head of the prose department of the weekly Orka and from 1957 to 1965 member of the editorial board of the monthly Bulletin des livres nouveaux et pièces de théâtre . His permanent collaboration with the Tygodnik Kulturalny lasted from 1962 to 1977. At the same time, he was head of the criticism department in the Twórczość magazine from 1966 to 1978 , where he headed the Czytanie w maszynopisie section from 1977 and the prose section from 1979 to 1988 and in 1980 the was the first deputy editor-in-chief. From 2005 to 2007 he was a juror for the Nike Literature Prize .
